My house is around 2000 square feet. I have high ceilings and tons of windows. The house is also spliced into tons of different rooms. Because certain areas have windows and sun exposure, they are hot spaces. Other rooms that are shaded and get hit with wind, are very cold. I had a central heating and cooling unit that used ductwork to provide the same temperature throughout the house. That method didn’t work at all. I don’t use every room in my house. I was wasting energy providing heating and cooling to the space. Also, I just had tons of hot and cold rooms with a central HVAC device. Having one thermostat was a pain.

I frequently would need to walk all throughout the house in order to adjust the temperature when I cook in the kitchen, clean the upstairs bathroom or go to bed at night. Now I don’t do that. I decided to change over to a zone control idea. With zone control I closed off the ductwork to certain rooms and added a ductless mini split. Those rooms have a thermostat that I can control from my phone. Now unused rooms are not getting HVAC. Rooms that used to be cold are now heated most of the year. The hot rooms can get AC and now affect anywhere else. I am now perfectly comfortable in my home. It was a high initial expense but totally worth it at the end of the day. My energy bills are even lower since I don’t need to provide AC all summer long to a giant house. I really only need cooling in the kitchen and the bedroom now.
