When I moved into my house it came with a gas furnace. I wasn’t totally pleased with that type of heating system. I didn’t want to deal with ductwork and the maintenance that goes with a furnace. However, the system was basically brand new and was taken really good care of. There was no reason for me to replace it when it had almost ten years left on its lifespan. I wanted something with cooling power though. I looked around and since I had ductwork, found I could do central air conditioning. However, after researching I realized that I could just do a dual fuel system. I already have a gas furnace, pairing an electric heat pump to the system is pretty efficient and smart. How the system then works is that it decides heating or air conditioning, gas or electric based on the temperature. A heat pump system can also provide heating, but to a point. It cannot heat when the outdoor temperatures are below freezing. The reason is because a heat pump uses the ambient heat. On slightly chilly, fall days, I can use my heat pump system and save some energy. It is way cleaner, quieter and more efficient to rely on the heat pump. When the weather turns for the worst, then the furnace tags in to finish the job. All summer long I can have a quality cooling system. I am really glad that I decided to link the two systems together and really get the best of both worlds. I get energy savings, both heating and cooling and service on one unit.
