After retiring from our jobs, my husband and I were anxious to move south. We’d had our fill of sub zero temperatures, constant snowfall and huge heating bills. We were tired of being at the mercy of the severe weather and trapped indoors for more than half the year. We bought a fixer-upper house with the idea of doing most of the work ourselves. The condition of the property made a more beneficial location affordable. Being quite handy, my husband and I were able to replace windows, appliances, cupboards and fixtures. We installed new drywall, insulation, electric lines, tile floors and countertops. However, we hired a professional to handle the installation of a new central air conditioner. With the high heat nearly year round in our new area, we wanted to be sure the air conditioner was sized and implemented properly.

At the time, the contractor recommended that we invest in a dehumidifier. We assumed he was just attempting to upsell us. However, after one summer in our new home, we realized that a dehumidifier was a necessity. Much like living up north, we are forced inside due to the high temperatures and humidity for a good part of the year. The dehumidifier pulls excess moisture out of the air and makes it feel cooler. It allows us to set the thermostat a bit higher, reduce wear and tear on the air conditioner and lower our monthly electric bill. It also prevents issues with air quality, mold growth and damage to home furnishings. While we prefer living in the south, it has been an adjustment.
